Hellfire and Brimstone
“Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.” Colossians 1:21-22
I’ve heard some Christians say they miss the “hellfire and brimstone” sermons of the 1950’s and 1960’s. I’m confused. If you’re already saved from hell, why would hell be your spiritual topic of choice? Many say because they don’t think we talk about hell enough. They believe many will go to hell because we don’t talk about hell. I believe there is definitely a hell, but I’d prefer to lead others to Heaven.
If your concern is for other people, why not reach out to those people and talk about Jesus’ power? Instead, some of us prefer to hear a preacher scare the bejeezers out of our friends and family. We call that, “witnessing.” We invite them to church praying they’re scared enough to choose Christ.
Really? In this day of chaos, confusion, and division that’s what you want to hear? That’s what you think people need to hear? There is a reason “Amazing Grace” is timeless. It’s the number one hymn sung across the world. Although published in 1779, it remains popular today.
NEWSFLASH: Christ’s love overpowers hell’s fire and brimstone. Jesus said it best on the cross. “It is finished.” The battle’s already won! Let’s talk about that!
Heaven = good. Hell = bad. Get it? Ok, there, I talked about hell.
