I just don't get it...

“They have a form of godliness but deny its power. Turn away from such people.  Those of this nature creep into houses and captivate weak women who are burdened with sins and led away with various desires; always learning, but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 2 Timothy 3:5-7

My youngest son coordinates the emergency response for New York City’s Health Department. His latest assignment? The measles epidemic.  Never in a million years did I believe America would come full circle. From the outbreak of childhood diseases to the discovery of preventative vaccinations to refusing preventative vaccinations resulting in the most recent outbreaks. I was talking with a young woman the other day and explained to her I understand this generation may not realize the damage that can be done, and the risks incurred for not vaccinating their children. I’ve also read the so-called scientific data that sways them.

The news media wants to try and tell us that these childhood diseases are being brought in from other countries. Justifying this rationale seems to be reiterated by the news station that is desiring a border wall believing that it will protect America. Realistically, if we look statistically, the truth of the matter is childhood diseases are again on the rise for multiple reasons. Illegal immigration is only a small part. There is also a risk among home schooled children and children attending private schools that do not require immunization records. My point? Don’t politicize the latest crisis.

I was alive during the days that scientists were attempting to prevent childhood diseases. My father shared with me that when he grew up in rural Louisiana during the 1930-40’s, parents actually put their children around children with childhood diseases so that they would get the disease as children and not as adults. The result was catastrophic; especially for the unborn exposed through a pregnant mother. I think I take this subject very personally for two reasons. Make that three. After all my son is dealing with the results of parents who are not immunizing their children.

The other two reasons are, first, I saw the effects that childhood diseases had on children who contracted them. My sister’s hearing was affected due to measles. She was deaf in one ear because of them. On the flipside, two of my sons had a reaction to one of the childhood immunizations. They didn’t die. They didn’t become autistic. We simply removed that childhood vaccination from the regimen from that point forward.

I am sorry that there has been so much false information spread causing mothers today to fear preventative medicine. So afraid that they deny or minimize any risks that childhood diseases can place on their children and their families. I regret that young mothers today are not looking at the community affect as much as they’re focusing on their own fears.  I believe Paul warned one way lies could destroy families and futures is to attack scared mothers. I fully understand that tactic.
