The Cheer

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

I was a cheerleader all through Junior High and High School. Are you impressed? Don’t be. I was a cheerleader before parents had to spend thousands of dollars paying for cheer lessons and cheer camps. I was a cheerleader before our society decided three-year-olds needed to be trained to cheer so that they could win a scholarship when they turned 18. I was a cheerleader before there were broken arms and busted noses. Truth be known, I was a cheerleader before it was a sport. In my day (geez, that sounds old!), cheerleading was fun. People waited for it. They didn’t pay for it. Girls earned it based more on natural talent and less on expensive training. Remember, I’m old. <wink>

During my years in cheer, we had a cheer that went something like this: Good, better, best. They’ll put us to the test. If good we are, better we’ll be. Good. Better. BEST! (Can you hear the crowd going wild?)

Believe it or not, I woke this morning with this cheer on my mind. However, God altered it a bit. Here’s what I woke up chanting:

Good. Better. Best.

God puts us to the test.

When good we are, better we’ll be…

Good. Better. BEST!

There are days God knows we need cheers from Heaven. There are days He seeks to motivate us and encourage us. There are also days that He expects us to do the same for others. Consider yourself cheered on by those who’ve gone before us! Or picture the cheer coming from an organic 60-year-old cheerleader in her pajamas. <wink>
