Resolve

“Oh, boy…I’m hurting and stressed,” said no human being ever. When we view life’s challenges from a human perspective, we can easily become overwhelmed. When we view life’s challenges from a heavenly perspective, we realize God’s goal is to make us more like Jesus.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” James 1:2-3

Steadfastness is a fancy word for resolve or persistence. If I were teaching a bible study and came across these verses, I would say that trials make us better people; although it never feels that way when we are going through them. James, Christ’s brother, encouraged us to find joy in our difficulties knowing that difficulties test our level of faith in God. How can we find joy in trials? It really doesn’t mean to be happy about our situation. James is teaching us to hold on to the hope that our faith is being built by the difficulties and we will end up with a firmer faith.

Faith is easy when life is easy. True faith is built during our challenging times.

My greatest challenge is to understand that, while I see life through temporary eyes, God is building me for an eternal perspective. I will spend a lot more time in my afterlife than I will spend in the here and now. We, as human beings, often focus entirely too much on this life instead of seeing this life as the preparation for the eternal life that is to come.

Develop an eternal perspective. When we do, the temporary interruptions to our earthly happiness have no bearing on our heavenly resolve.

When my sister was in her final days, I listened to this song over and over again. Had I allowed earthly thoughts to rule my heart and mind, I would have been devastated. Because I focused on the heavenly, I was sad but content knowing her suffering was very, very temporary.

Home by Chris Tomlin

This world is not what it was meant to be

All this pain, all this suffering

There's a better place waiting for me

In Heaven

Every tear will be wiped away

Every sorrow and sin erased

We'll dance on seas of amazing grace

In Heaven

In Heaven

I'm goin' home

Where the streets are golden

Every chain is broken

Oh I wanna go

Oh I wanna go

Home

Where every fear is gone

I'm in your open arms

Where I belong

Home

Lay down my burdens, I lay down my past

I run to Jesus, no turning back

Thank God Almighty, I'll be free at last

In Heaven

In Heaven

I'm goin' home

Where the streets are golden

Every chain is broken

Oh I wanna go

Oh I wanna go

Home

Where every fear is gone

I'm in your open arms

Where I belong

Blinded eyes

Will finally see

The dead will rise

On the shores of eternity

The trump will sound

The angels will sing

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I am

Goin' home

Where the streets are golden

Every chain is broken

Oh I wanna go

Oh I wanna go

Home

Where every fear is gone

I'm in your open arms

Where I belong

Where I belong

I'm goin' home

I'm goin' home

I'm on my way home

I'm goin' home
