Back to Basics

I must admit I was shocked. I was shocked, which revealed my naivety. While I understand many people opt out of church, I never realized some were never offered the opportunity to decide for themselves in the first place.

I was with a 40-something year old woman one day and in our conversation, I mentioned the song, “Jesus Loves Me.” The woman started out with a confused look on her face and the confused look quickly turned into sadness. She said, “I was never taken to church as a child. I don’t know that song.”

I tried not to show my shock. How in the world can there be an American adult who did not learn the song, “Jesus Loves Me” as a child? I would understand if the woman came from a home that chose a different religion. That is believable. But, to be offered no belief system at all? I am naïve.

The experience prompted me to Google the lyrics to the song, “Jesus Loves Me.” While the song was written for children, we are all God’s children. I encourage you to read this very basic, childlike song in hopes that it will introduce you to faith. Perhaps it will serve to booster the faith you once had:

Jesus loves me. This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He who died,
Heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me - loves me still,
When I'm very weak and ill;
From His shining throne on high,
Comes to watch me where I lie.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He will stay,
Close beside me all the way;
He's prepared a home for me,
And some day His face I'll see.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

This song says it all from start to finish. If you are an adult who wasn’t introduced to the Christian faith as a child, this song offers a pure simplicity regarding a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you are an adult choosing not to introduce your child to Jesus, I have one question – Why?
