“If the Lord had not been on our side”—
let Israel say this!—
if the Lord had not been on our side,
when men attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive,
when their anger raged against us.
The water would have overpowered us;
the current would have overwhelmed us.
The raging water
would have overwhelmed us.
The Lord deserves praise,
for he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth.
We escaped with our lives, like a bird from a hunter’s snare.
The snare broke, and we escaped.
Our deliverer is the Lord,
the Creator of heaven and earth.”
I encourage you to read and re-read this Psalm. The Psalm was written by King David. The Book of Psalms is a collection of poems and songs written by many authors. This Psalm - Psalm 124 - is one of my favorites.
I like to call this Psalm, “Trapped and Released.” Without God’s hand of protection, life can feel like a horrible trap. For me, without faith, life is hopeless. I realize some of my more educated friends see my religion as a sign of weakness. His word teaches me that His power is made perfect in my weakness. When I give up, He shows up.
Life can seem overwhelming from time to time. Prayer is the release I need. Prayer is like a singing tea kettle. When the pressure builds, the kettle begins to whistle. When life’s pressures are just too much, I sing God’s praises. He deserves it. Without Him, my teapot would have exploded a long time ago.
Here is a fun blast from the past:
Prayer is where my soul meets that tipping point.
