While visiting one of the most conservative towns in Texas among some of the most conservative people, I observed many conservative men wearing an earring. I found this interesting considering 25-30 years ago male earrings were not mainstream. To wear an earring back then meant one of two things: sexual orientation or drug availability. Or so they said. We were never quite sure who “they” were but I am sure it was the beginning of fake news. Some of the fakest of news is started in Christian circles.
Men wearing an earring is no big deal now. I realize it is still a big deal to some of you, but when you consider what temptations are available today – earrings seem small. Times change.
Now in the most conservative town among the most conservative group of people, male earrings exist. All they reflect today is someone's personal choice in jewelry. What seems weird or wrong today often winds up being tomorrow's norm. We've just got to give it time understanding the things that scare us typically end up having zero power in our lives.
I think God said something about focusing on the trivial, didn't He?
2 Timothy 2:23-24, “Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.”
Oops. God forgive me.
If you look very closely in the picture accompanying this blog, there is a tiny, little earring. When you stack trivial matters up against the Spirit of God, the “giant” is reduced in size. Don’t sweat the small stuff and it really is all small stuff unless it involves eternal stuff.
