Titus 2:3-5

I realize this verse can get me into trouble. The problem with how we read the Bible these days is often based on how we read the Bible. We don’t like to admit it, but we read through our cultural, generational and denominational lens. We assume words like, “submit,” or “obedience,” mean “lesser than” or “ruled by.” Uh, that would be false.

Some claim that I come across as a “know-it-all.” I like to think that I am more of a “lived-it-done-it” kind of person. For example, the name of my business is “Lessons Learned.” I hope to follow the instructions provided in Titus 2:3-5.

It can be tough living out this verse in today’s world. Some younger women feel I am butting into their business. My intent is to teach lessons I’ve learned along the way. I realize most of us have to learn our own lessons the hard way. Every now and then, someone listens and God uses me to teach them.

I’ve been encouraged to wait until others ask for help. That’s a hard concept for me. If I see someone physically drowning, I’m going to jump in to assist. If I see someone driving down the wrong side of the street, I’m going to correct them for their own safety. It’s just who I am.

It is also difficult to be on the learning end of the lesson. There are those women I consider my elders that offer insight and provide input into my journey. I believe their intent is to practice Titus 2:3-5 effectively and accurately. It’s just hard to maintain a teachable spirit; especially the older we get. It feels better to be a know-it-all regardless of our age, doesn’t it?

I am going to live by Titus 2:3-5 even when it gets me into trouble. I am going to do it because the Bible asks me to do it. While it didn't make God's top Ten Commandments list, it is a Biblical concept and provides a Christian perspective. As far as defining those irritating words like, “submission,” or “obedience,” I am going to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s will and His true intent. God allowed His scribes to write these lessons down to be passed on from generation to generation. I just happen to believe that we, today’s readers, make these words a much bigger issue than was ever intended.
