Will the real Jehovah please stand up?
“Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as if it were coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, who made us adequate to be servants of a new covenant not based on the letter but on the Spirit, for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Corinthians 3:5-6
The TV Show “To Tell the Truth” was a fun show where a group of celebrities tried to guess the true identity of certain guests. The show’s producers employed two imposters to sit alongside the real deal in an attempt to fool the celebrity panel. Many times, the celebrities looked foolish. After allowing the celebrities to ask a series of questions, they made their individual guess to determine which of the guests were telling the truth. The host would then ask, “Would the real _________________ please stand up.” It was always fun to watch the looks on each celebrity’s face when it was revealed if they guessed correctly or if they were totally off base.
Christianity is a living and breathing game of “To Tell the Truth.” There are so many myths, falsehoods, lies, misunderstandings, and misleading information out there today that the non-believing world is begging for the real Jehovah to please stand up.
MYTH #1: God is mad at us and is, therefore, going to destroy us.
This myth stems from my brothers and sisters who want to try to set the world straight by attempting to scare us all to death. These believers seem to forget that God stopped the practice of destroying people after the Old Testament years. Once Christ was revealed, grace covered us. We no longer need to be afraid of God. While we need to possess a healthy “fear” or respect of God and understanding of His holiness, contrary to popular falsehoods, God is not out to get us.
MYTH #2: God is similar to Santa Claus. If you are good, you are rewarded. If you are bad, He withholds His blessings.
The myth of a present-giving God is really cruel. It basically says that if you do all the right things, only good things happen to you. However, if you mess up, the hammer comes down. While Jesus was a carpenter, He never pounds us in the ground with a holy hammer. The bible repeatedly teaches that life will not always be rosy, but God will always be present. There are weeds in everyone’s garden and the rain falls on the just and the unjust. Look it up. The Word says it.
MYTH #3: God sits in judgment and will zap us if we don’t straighten up.
I grow increasingly confused by this stand that God is going to abandon the United States of America because the United States of America has abandoned God. If God planned on abandoning us (either personally or nationally), I believe he would have done it a long time ago. He wouldn’t have come down in human form to save us in the first place. If God were going to toss us overboard, we would have already drowned. Christian, where are you getting your theology? He will never leave us or forsake us. Jesus commissioned us to spread His news and make disciples of everyone. What promise followed that calling on our lives? “I will be with you always even until the end of the world.” Judgement and punishment come at death. God stopped zapping cities, towns and countries once grace entered the picture. Stop living under the Law and spread the news of His loving grace, please.
MYTH #4: If we don’t do what our pastor tells us to do or what church doctrine teaches, we aren’t really a Christian.
Again, this releases the essence of being held captive by rules. Grace, grace, grace, grace. You either believe what the Word says or you don’t. Which is it?
If you – if we – are trying to live by the letter of the Law, we will not only live defeated but we will live in confusion as well as being guilty of confusing others. There is no way we can be “good enough” for God. I’m going to say it again, “Grace, grace, grace, grace.
Oh, by the way, there were two Believers that were zapped under the New Covenant. Guess what they were caught doing? Lying in their testimony. Can we all say, “Hmmmmmm…..?”
